About the studio
My name is Sergei Tysyachuk. I am a coppersmith, and I work by hand in Franklin, Tennessee.
Everything that leaves this workshop is solid copper, shaped from flat sheet — roof finials and spires, gutter downspout conductor heads, and framed abstract wall work. No castings, no blanks, nothing bought in and re-sold. Each piece is cut, folded, hammered and soldered by one pair of hands, and no two are ever the same.
I have never put paint on copper, and I never will. The color is already in the metal; the craft is knowing how to bring it out and when to stop. A torch drawn slowly across a sheet pulls reds, purples and golds to the surface. Jax patina and time give the aged green you see on old church roofs. Left bare, copper simply weathers on its own — new-penny rose deepening to a dark brown over the years. Nature does the finest coloring work of all. My job is to work with it rather than cover it up.
Most of what I make is built to someone else’s measurements. Send me the dimensions of a roof pitch or a cupola base, a drawing, or a photograph of a finial that has gone missing from an old house, and I will make the piece to fit it. I work with roofing contractors and on restoration jobs, and there is no minimum order — a single finial for a single house is a normal day’s work here.
Copper has been my material for more than a decade. Handmade pieces have gone to homes across the United States and as far as Italy, and I still answer the telephone myself.
